Many members were able to make this meeting when the book under discussion was City of Falling Angels by John Berendt.
This is a factual book about the fire at the Fenice opera house in Venice in January 1996, but it was written in such an engaging way that it held the attention of all the readers. Berendt is a journalist, but his vivid characterisations of the people he meets and descriptions of the places he visits makes you feel that you are there with him on this journey, and the story he tells is so fascinating that it is sometimes hard to remember that he is describing real people and real events.
This memorable book – in which there were so many interesting characters – was greatly enjoyed by the members and they would be happy to recommend it to others. Some felt a map of the areas in Venice he was writing about would have been helpful, but others thought that not being quite sure where he was talking about added to the mystique of this strange city. Favourable comparisons were made between this story of Venice and Berendt’s better known book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which focuses on Savannah in the deep south of America and has been made into a film.
After some vigorous discussions about this book, it was agreed that we will read Every Last One by Anna Quindlen next and discuss this at our next meeting on Thursday August 21st at 2pm in the library at Scarlet as usual.
