As the hotel is closed in January one of the members kindly hosted this meeting at their house when the book under discussion was “Marriage Material” by Sathnam Sanghera.
The consensus was that this was a very enjoyable – and at times funny -book that offered an insightful and balanced view of a Sikh community in Wolverhampton. Generally, this was felt to be a worthwhile reworking of Arnold Bennett’s book which retained the power to shock and surprise and was a book that members would recommend. However, one member was not convinced by the authenticity of the portrayal of Sikh life.
The next book club meeting will be on Thursday 26 February at 2pm in the library at Scarlet when a very different book will be under discussion – “Mr Foote’s Other Leg” by Ian Kelly. This is the biography of the Georgian actor, playwright and theatre owner who began his adult life as a reluctant law student from Truro.
In addition, there will be a meeting of the play reading group on Thursday 5 March at 5.45pm in the lower dining room at Scarlet when we will be reading“Blood Wedding” by Lorca.
