Jim Bass is our wine specialist at the Scarlet hotel. We caught up with him to find a little bit more about what makes him tick, including his favourite Scarlet moment…

When did you start working at the Scarlet?

I started at Scarlet on 1st August 2017

What does a typical day at the Scarlet look like for you?

I have an incredibly varied role, with no two days the same – which is great!  I love my evening wine shifts the most.  I come in and taste lovely food and wine in order to pair the evening’s menus which is fun and challenging.

What’s your favourite #scarletmoment?

This year so far I have had the opportunity to judge on the Sommelier Wine Awards panel in London and visit the RAW wine fair also in London to meet some incredible producers and taste some exceptional natural, low intervention wines. A particular highlight was sitting in the Georgian Wine Speakers Corner session with Baia’s Abuladze from Baia’s Wine, Imereti, Georgia.  She is the youngest female winemaker in the Georgian wine scene with a strong, positive attitude and exceptional wines!!

Tell us about your hobbies?

I love food and wine obviously! Being outdoors, long coastal walks and my family. I used to be focused on surfing and snowboarding but am now more likely to be found hanging out with my two-year-old daughter on the beach than out back in the sea.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Heather my daughter inspires me each day.  I am also inspired by the many focused, positive and passionate professionals who drive change in the wine industry.

Sweet or savoury?

Both!  I have a terrible sweet tooth but love savoury classics too.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I am lucky to have travelled extensively for wine, surf and snow. I have yet to visit South America and would love to experience Peru and everything the land of the endless lefts has to offer.
