The book under discussion was H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald an autobiographical account of her decision to train a goshawk called Mabel, whilst trying to come to terms with the sudden death of her much loved father.
This book came with rave reviews that were hard to ignore and had therefore perhaps heightened and coloured our expectations. Whilst most agreed that the author’s descriptions of nature were beautifully and evocatively written, some thought the account was repetitive and didn’t always engage at a deeper level. However, themes explored in the book gave rise to interesting chats and expressing of views on such topics as the nature of grief and depression, and the history and rights and wrongs of falconry.
The next meeting will be on Thursday 23rd July at 2pm in the library at Scarlet when the book under discussion will be Not Quite Nice by Celia Imrie.
