Introducing: Jilly Sutton

Trained as a sculptor at Exeter College of Art, Jilly's career developed in Nigeria, where she was inspired by the unique use of carvings and textiles. Jilly's imagination comes from the ancient trees and woodland that surround her studio on the banks of the River Dart in Devon. Using locally fallen or felled timber, Jilly carves large heads and figures, sandblasting and liming to give them their unique, grainy character. Although her work is figurative, with an overriding sense of tranquility, abstraction also features in her oeuvre.

Jilly's creativity takes form in wings, moths and butterflies etched into natural materials or as abstract head and body artistic formations. Jilly's creations have an air of tranquility, similar to the feeling of walking quietly through the woods - you feel at peace immersing yourself in nature and you have the same reflections when gazing upon Jilly's works.

At Scarlet Hotel, Jilly Sutton’s “Female Angel” (170 × 130 × 130 cm) embodies her masterful union of materiality and emotion. Carved from eucalyptus and lime and finished with leather and pigment, the imposing yet ethereal figure bridges the rugged essence of timber with a sense of transcendent calm—perfectly resonating with our Cornwall setting, where natural elements and human artistry intertwine.

Along with the cool, salty ocean breeze, art flows through every breath of Scarlet.
