When it comes to finding out about the best places to eat out around here, we knew just who to ask: our delightfully down-to-earth but eminently accomplished Executive Chef, Tom Hunter.
Here’s what he had to say about eating out in Cornwall:
“If you’re looking for a foodie pub, then first and best is the St Kew Inn, in the beautiful Parish of St Kew. It’s an amazing traditional Cornish pub in a Cornish village, and they do the best Sunday roast I’ve ever had. They also do really good, really simple pub food too. They’re incredibly friendly, and it’s a lovely environment. It’s one of those 15th century inns with the open fireplace and logs crackling on a cold winter day and a great garden for the summer.
“If I could have my last meal anywhere it would be there, and it’s not just about the food – it’s everything they deliver. I’ve been taking my son Oscar there since he was a few months old. He’s four now and they all know him. It’s a really relaxing place to go.
“It’s won a fair few awards, been voted one of the top 50 pubs in the UK, and received Michelin Bib Gourmet recognition.”
“When I have something to special to celebrate in Cornwall, it’s got to be Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow. Although it’s got a high-end reputation, it’s friendly and informal and the food really lives up to the hype – beautiful and really, really fresh with generous portions. Yes, it’s a special occasion place, but it’s very approachable and well worth it.”
For a dinner out, The Old Grammar School in Truro serves great cocktails and tapas, and the food is incredibly well put together. The staff are lovely and it’s just down the road from where I live, so if I feel like popping out for a relaxing evening out, it’s just the place.
If it’s an off the cuff lunch, then the Hub Box in Truro is great. The quality of the burgers is incredible. And you know you’re in a good place because it’s always so busy. They stock fantastic, regularly changing craft beers and the standard of the burgers is just incredible.”
For a good all rounder, I like the Stable in Newquay. It has a cider and pizza offering with fantastic views and alfresco dining overlooking the famous Fistral Beach.
