We set out to build a new hotel because we wanted to show that sumptuous need not mean unsustainable, and that luxury isn't necessarily a guilty pleasure.
As a place influenced only by the natural rhythms of Mother Nature, The Scarlet aims to do all that it can to reduce its negative impact on the environment, without compromising the experience or service guests receive. The ‘Cherish our World' ethos, carried by all of the Scarlet team, is not simply something that we feel is right; it is a necessity and our way of life.
We recognise that as a relatively large hospitality organisation, we have a responsibility to reduce our negative impacts on the environment and our local community; we…
Here at the Scarlet, we are very proud of our beautiful building. We realise, however, that to be truly sustainable the activities and decisions we make within the hotel must be the right ones, as they can have a major impact on our natural environment, local economy and community.
We have written a Sustainability Policy that sets out our aims as a responsible business, and we set annual business goals to ensure our policy is being put into practice.
There are a number of ways in which our activities help us keep our footprint light, and because we are always looking for new ways to improve, this list continues to grow.
For further information about anything mentioned below, please contact our Sustainability Manager Claire Beard on sustainability@scarlethotel.co.uk.
MINIMISING OUR WASTE
We recycle everything we possibly can, from our food waste to our leftover guest soaps (which are used as stain removers by our laundry) this year we have a goal of reducing the amount of waste we sent to landfill by a third!
We think it’s really important to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the first place and have been working closely with some of our suppliers to reduce the amount of packing their products arrive in. In some cases we have not only reduced the packaging that suppliers leave with us, but created new, reusable packaging that eliminates waste completely!
REDUCING OUR WATER CONSUMPTION
On site we have a fantastic grey water recycling system, however we are also conscious of the water footprint that our laundry has. We have recently removed table cloths from our dining room, challenging the need for them in a fine dining atmosphere! The towels in our Spa are still 100% fairly traded organic cotton, however they are now a slightly lighter weight so more can go into one load of washing, and they take less time to dry.
KEEPING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT SMALL
We aim to reduce our carbon footprint by 10% each year, and while we have some fantastic low energy equipment to help us achieve this, it is just as important that our team are aware of how energy is being used. We have a fantastic building management system that enables us to monitor energy use around the building and in different departments. We use this information to engage with our staff and encourage feedback on areas for improvement. We also work with our suppliers to ensure minimal numbers of deliveries are made and journeys are planned to be as efficient as possible.
ENHANCING OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
We organize a minimum of four beach cleans a year and invite our staff, members of the local community, and our guests to come along and join in. At our most recent clean we cleared 25kg of rubbish, plus more fishing lines, nets and rope that we could get on the scales! Local litter picks around the hotel are due to be organized during the summer months to keep our surroundings clean both for guests and local residents. We are also looking into other ways we can lend a hand in our community, and hope to organize some more volunteer opportunities for our staff to participate in.
We operate a BUY LOCAL POLICY and have set ourselves a goal for 2012 to source 90% of our consumables from suppliers in the South West. This applies to food and drink, building materials, printing, stationary and other general supplies. We not only purchase products from local suppliers but we also seek to foster relationships with them, allowing us to give and receive constructive feedback and advice, which in turn helps them and us to become better business partners.
Our Restaurant and Spa are OPEN TO NON-RESIDENTS, and we try to hold regular events that involve our community.
We operate a CHARITABLE REQUEST POLICY to respond to the numerous requests receive from individuals asking for support for a particular charitable cause close to their hearts. As an organization, we set out a policy to support local charities wherever possible, particularly those that will benefit a large number of people or the natural environment in Cornwall and the South West. We are also supportive of any charitable initiative that members of our team might be involved in.
We are keen to SHARE BEST PRACTICE with others, and our Sustainability Manager regularly provides tours of the hotel for local students, businesses, and interested guests. We are Ambassadors for the Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Partnership (CoaST) and are often invited to participate in and speak at events that both educate other businesses and work towards a sustainable future for Cornwall and the South West.
We are committed to decreasing any negative impacts we have on our stunning surroundings, continually improving upon our positive environmental and social efforts, ensuring that we deliver a high quality, environmentally sensitive hotel.
