co2balance

The background
co2balance’s mission statement:

"To provide a simple and practical way to individuals and businesses of balancing their unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions in a way which also benefits the British landscape and its value as a wildlife habitat."

Award-winning co2balance helps individuals and businesses to minimise CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions and offset unavoidable residue via a process called carbon offsetting. Carbon Offsetting works by investing funds in sequestration (the process of capturing carbon dioxide through planting trees) or energy efficiency projects that absorb or prevent the release of a tonnage of CO2 equivalent to the associated Carbon Footprint.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow; we do acknowledge that the uptake is slow, compared with other avoidance offset projects, however we believe that carbon sequestration is an important long-term project which can help capture CO2 already released from fossil sources.

Reducing our carbon footprint
At The Scarlet we feel that is it our duty to reduce and mitigate our contributions to climate change which is why we have built our hotel to the highest of environmental standards: we have installed triple glazed windows, high levels of insulation, low energy, sensor operated lighting, solar panels and a biomass boiler to heat the hotel swimming pools and water, and have opted for a more expensive electricity tariff which ensures we receive 100% renewable energy. We also actively encourage staff and guests to travel to the hotel by foot, bike, bus or train and work closely with our suppliers to reduce our food miles.

Additionally we teamed up with co2balance to enable our staff and guests to offset the carbon emissions associated with their travel. co2balance will counteract the emissions from travel arrangements by planting native broadleaf trees at Tinners Forest near Roche; land which is owned and protected by a charitable trust. The trees will be allowed to grow, feeding oxygen back into the atmosphere, for 100 years before the land is handed back to the local community. As well as the carbon uptake, our sequestration project with co2balance provides significant biodiversity benefits as a community forest for our guests, staff and local residents to enjoy.
